D1 Nation All American Prodigy Camp All Stars

Last Saturday's Fall All American prodigy Camp was chock full of young talent.  I reported Monday on the various Award Winners.  These included Camp MVP 2013 G Darius Brooks from Pflugerville, TX, Defensive MVP 2012 G 5'10" Malik Brooks of Cibolo Steele, Mr. Hustle 2012 G Michael Hardge of Georgetown & Hotshots shooter deluxe 2012 W 6'3" Hayden Graham of Austin Anderson.



Today, let's concentrate on the other 10 kids who garnered Camp All Star recognition.  In alphabeical order:

2013 G 6' 3" Rasmus Bach (left) of Austin Anderson, TX

Everytime I see Bach he simply gets better and better.  He's a craftsman, always working on his game.  He brings length, savvy, and a broadening skill set to the table.  He's one of the can't miss guys in this area.  His Mom & Pops were both Olympians for Australia in team handball.

2013 G 5'10" Darian Bostic (right) of Pflugerville, TX

One of a stable of talented Pflugerville guards in the Class of 2013 who have to patiently wait their turn at a varsity spot, Bostic should grow to 6'2" or more.  His shot is ever improving and perhaps most importantly he's beginning to explode to the rim on a more regular basis.  He's got astroing bloodlines too as Uncle Haerb Bostic played in a Final Four with Michigan State & his Aunt is in the Indiana Hoosiers Hall of Fame.

2014 G 5'11" Chase Carleton (right) of Austin Westlake, TX

Austin Westlake Coach Tres Ellis has to be licking his chops for next year when he can have a backcourt of savvy 2013 PG Will Morse joined by 2014 PG Chase Carleton.  Carleton is physical, heady and knows how to run a high level squad with talent.  He can shoot it too. His Pops, Craig hooped for the Texas Longhorns back in the day.

2014 G 6'2" Trey Dilworth (left) of Round Rock McNeil, TX

Dilworth, as reported here a couple of weeks back is the complete package.  t 14 years old he plays like a prospect several years older.  He's got all the physical tools.  Part of his challenge will to be not allowing himself to get bored and to always push himself.  He dominated most of the players at camp when he WANTED to. His ability, mixed with D1 Nation publicity will assist in blowing him up on the National scene.

2012 W 6'3" Hayden Graham (left) of Austin Anderson, TX

Havign grown several inches in the last little while should shoot Graham onto the scene in the Cen Tex this year.  He'll have a chance to put his print on an Anderson team begging for leadership.  He may have the best pure stroke in the area, and once he learns to get to the rim as well he will become a very tough matchup.

2011 F 6'5" Demondre Harvey (right) of Minden, LA

Harvey is an imposing physical specimen. At first glance, he's a shoo in D1 guy.  Needs to get the motor revving a little higher, on a more consistent basis.  Plays above the rim, but doesn't realize he can do it most anytime he wants.

2012 W 6' 4" Kyle Hittle (right) of New Braunfels, TX

If I had to pick a guy to go into battle with, Hittle wouldn't be a bad choice.  He's old school, and doesn't mind getting dirty.  Seems to raise his game, the better the competition.  Rebounds well, gets to the hole and can knock down the three pointer.

Jenkins can be an enigma.  This summer at the Minnesota Pump N Run Event, with the Texas D1 Ambassadors he was part of a frontline of 6'5" Jaleel Williams, 6'7" Karim York (Santa Clara) and his play there made it hardpressed to determine who was the best of the three.  On the other hand, he has a habit of getting frustrated. If he applies himself this senior campaign then there will be more than just Arkansas State & Northern Colorado trying to court him. He's got a long wingspan, is athletic & has a nice perimeter stroke.

2014 G 6' 4" Aubrie King of Mumford, TX

It must be a heck of a fight at the King house between Aubrie & his Pops Alvie King who is one Texas' all time great shooters.  For now we'll give the elder King the edge, but he doesn't have young Aubrie's heighth as he's closing in on 6'4".  If we can keep the lanky shooter off the baseball field (where he's also a heck of a pitcher) then he could have a great future on the hardwood.

2013 G 5' 11" Napoleon Onyeje of Pflugerville, TX

Onyeje barely lost the Hot Shot Shooting Contest at the All American Prodigy Camp (in overtime to boot) but in addition to his ability to knock down shots, Onyeje is a scorer.  He's cat quick and should do major damage this year on JV as he's another one of Pflugerville Coach Mike Murphy's crew of 2013 ballers.

2012 W 6'4" Jamal Shabazz of Pflugerville

Shabazz is almost 6'5" (without the flat top).  His move in to Pflugerville from the private school ranks give the Panthers some much needed height.  He's a bouncy, above the rim player with a nice stroke to do damage outside as well as in.

2016 G 4' 1" Daniel Ven Zant of Midland, TX

In attendance for his 3rd straght All American Prodigy Camp, Daniel "l'il Hot Sauce" Ven Zant of Midland always holds his own.  During the smmer I saw him competing at 17U and he still gave veteran guards fits with his ball handling.  It's like a yo yo on a string.  Once Ven Zant grows he'll be The Package.  Right now he's got to slingshot his scoring attempts as strength is an issue but that will change here shortly.  He's definitely one to watch!

Team James and crew attended the super showcase event held in Frisco Texas this past weekend. The talented group of girls went 2-2 as it was some pretty good competition. With over 50 coaches on hand, it was put up or shut up time. D-1 came out with lots of intensity and competed hard every single game. Going up against the Louisiana Lady Lighting really got about 20 coaches attention as they sat around and enjoyed a very competitive game. All the girls did a great job this weekend, while getting a ton of great exposure.

Player Spotlight: 2012 W 5'11 I'Tiana Taylor

2012 W 5'11 I'Tiana Taylor continues to be an impressive player.Taylor is a nice prospect with adequate athleticism, size and length along with great shooting ability. In Taylor you got a versatile wing-forward that can put the ball on the floor, and also work you down in the post. I had a chacne to watch Taylor play out in Frisco Texas this weekend. With a load of coaches on-hand, The junior from Pflugerville helped her team to a key victory over District 7 5A power house Irving Mc Author. I'Tiana dropped 16 that game, and grab countless rebounds to help her team fight off the Lady Cardinals of Mc Author. I'Tiana will be be a huge impact player for Coach Walling and the Pflugerville Panthers this season. Taylor will be a nice D-1 prospect in the class of 2012.

What are some of your hobbies outside of basketball?

I love working out at my fathers gym, and cooking.

I like listening to rap music before games

I don't know what players are from Texas.
List some goals you've set for this year?
Goals I have set for this year are making it to the State Tournament, and putting myself in positon to be recruited by major D-1 schools.
What's the most memorable moment in your high school career?
Passing the ball to a team member that was diagnosed with cancer and him hitting the game winning shot.

My best sports center moment was crossing over a player then dunking on a 6'6 player on the other team.
What college or NBA player do you model your game after?
Kevin Durant. but focusing more on being a defensive stopper.

As of now it's hard to say. I have been getting lots of letters.

I have no idea.
If you won a $1,000,000 what would you do with it?
I would first take care of my family, then put some aside for a restaraunt I would like to own. The rest would go to a cancer charity.
Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?
I see myself playing in the NBA

Austin is a long, lean player with great potential.  He's agile, skilled and can shoot it.  He blocks shots and can jump out of the gym.  (Pretty good genes as his dad, Charles was the Olympic Gold Medalist in the high jump.  As he gains strength, learns to put the ball on the floor a little better and puts on some beef then Austin will easily be a mid major, and likely high major recruit.-Coach Max Ivany

D1 Nation Sweet 16 Super Showcase Recap

In only it's second year and with no real marketing to speak of, the D1 Nation's Sweet 16 Super Showcase has quickly become a MUST ATTEND fall event in the Austin/San Antonio area.  This year's event was held on the beautiful new campus at Concordia University in Austin.  A special thanks go out to Head Coach Stan Bonewitz, and his two Asssitants; Coach Black & Coach Hudson.

The participants, in alphabetical order were Austin Akins, Austin High, Austin St. Michael's, Austin Waldorf, Austin Westlake, Bryan, Georgetown, Killeen Ellison, Killeen Shoemaker, Marble Falls, Pflugerville, Pflugerville Connally, San Antonio Brennan, San Antonio Reagan, San Marcos & a loose collection of kids under the D1 Ambassadors name whose high schools did not compete as a team.

We all know it's early season basketball, some teams are shorthanded until their football players join them in December (hey, this is Texas), there's not a lot of organized play calling & the high school coach has not put his stamp on the team as they've yet to start the official practices.  However there's no denying that it's good for kids to get a run in, fun to see different matchups than the regular season might otherwise bring & that the kids take it serious for preseason bragging rights.  And of course, who doesn't like to see their name in lights, and to receive a little bit of additional publicity brought to you courtesy of the D1 Nation. In addition several college coaches were on hand as well as Concordia & St. Edward's were in attendance along with several Junior Colleges.

As far as the games were concerned there were several teams who went 2-0 on the day.  Bryan, Georgetown, Pflugerville, San Antonio Brennan, Austin High, Killeen Shoemaker & Killeen Ellison earned that distinction.  IMO Bryan, Ellison and Pflugerville have the personnel to make a deep run.  At the high school level it's all about guard play and these schools have it.

Bryan: Coach John Reese is going to have his crew stepping off the bus running, pressing & trapping. If you can't stand the heat, then get out of the kitchen.  Of course it doesn't hurt to have his son 2012 PG J. Mychal Reese on the floor doing his thing.  Young Reese was the consensus #1 player in the Nation for several years in a row and he's right there with the best of them in the country. NOBODY stays in front of him and his trademark lefty tear drop floater in the lane is unstoppable. What more can you say about the only likely 4 time All State player in Texas 5A history when all is said and done?

Add 2013 phoenom PG Travon Landry to the Bryan backcourt this season as last year's freshman starter for San Antonio Madison has moved down to Aggieland to represent the Vikings. When bryan gets the lead, and spreads the floor it's all over with these two lightning quick floor generals taking care of the rock. 2012 W 6'3" A.J. Pullian was the Vikes 3rd leading scorer on the day and shows great promise. Also look for 2013 W 6'4" Chris Johnson to have a major impact once he returns from his QB role on the Vikings football team.

Georgetown:  We welcome back Coach Russell Miller to the Cen Tex area after having coached in Frisco and the DFW area over the last several years.  He'll bring a new toughness to Georgetown.  They'll be led by 2012 PG Michael Hardge who already has one D1 offer in his pocket (Texas State). Hardge (below left) is super quick and improved as a shooter.  He'll also get help from 2011 F 6'5" Logan Webb, 2011 G Casey Heller & 2013 physical youngster, Jacob Vick (below right)

Pflugerville:  Mike Muphy is a guard's coach, and boy does he have ballhandler after ballhandler to throw at you.  None is better though than 2011 PG Deon Mitchell (below left) .  Recruited as a high major, Mitchell committed to NCAA Sweet Sixteen program Northern Iowa when they promised to put the ball in his hands as a true freshman. In the meantime, the super smooth Mitchell will continue to put up big numbers for the Panthers who barely lost to Region rep Converse Wagner in last year's playoffs.  2011's Cameron Blue, Darrian Dempsey & transfer W 6'4" Jamal Shabazz will be running and gunning for The Ville all year but let's not forget about 2013 PG T.J. Williams (below right).  He's the heir apparent to Mitchell and the best pure point guard in the City of Austin in the Class of 2013. He'll be relied upon heavily to keep all  the above scorers happy by distributing the ball.

San Antonio Brennan: Thefirst year school out of San Antonio's Northside ISD will not have a senior, but they'll be competing in varsity at the 4A level.  Neither of their opponents was particularly tough but they won going away each time.  Credit Coach Tommy Hines as he takes on a new challenge. Hines was a key part of San Antonio Jay's State Championship under legendary Coach Romy Vela some years back and led San Antonio Lee (aka Paul Garnica & the 11 Dwarfs) to 30 plus win seasons.  You can bet that Brennan will become a tough out as he puts his stamp on this program. 

2013 Johnny Azzinarro of San Antonio Brennan

He'll have an outstanding floor general in 2013 Johnny Azzinarro who started last year as a frosh at San Antonio O'Connor.  The New Jersey native brings an East Coast confidence to his game and has as good a midrange game as any sophomore that I've seen. He's got some growing to do, but he knows how to run a team way beyond his years.  I also liked 2012 workhorse 6'3" Christian Davis who can hurt you inside and out, 2012 Malachi Cravens & promising WG 2013 George King.

Austin High  The Maroons have a potent lineup this year that can contend with anyone.  The senior backcourt of Eric "Quick" McClellan & Alex Reinking won't take a backseat to many teams in the Region.  McClellan is closing in on 6'4". He's long & bouncy, and loves to flush in transition.  Reinking is tough as nails.  He hits shots, rebounds like a forward and defends hard as well.  The wildcard for Austin High is 2013 F 6'5" Patrick Strake.  Strake is a savvy player, who plays like a veteran despite being a sophomore.  He can shoot it from the perimeter and doesn't mind mixing it up down low.

Killeen Shoemaker: The Grey Wolves are in a killer district but they have leadership and toughness at the PG spot in 2011 Anthony McDonald who keeps the ball on a string, SG Anthony Gonzalez who has a sweet stroke & the biggest man in the district in 2011 6'7" Malcolm McDonald.  McDonald is long and has a nice perimeter shot.  I'd like to see him mix it up down low a little more.  He's slender but once he puts on weight will be a nice college player.

Killeen Ellison: With the David Manley era now in the past Coach Alberto Jones squad is chock full of seniors who can give other teams fits.  PG Devonta Brown (Indiana State) brings athleticism and energy.  Undersized post Shane Jones (wearing his Greg Oden goggles) competes hard, and keeps things alive on the boards.  The Ellison Eagles got a big win vs a talented Austin Akins squad as they outworked the "other" Eagles on the glass turning a 10 point half time deficit into a 10 point win.  6'5"W Jaleel Williams simply has the most talent in the Area.  The catch is, he has to continue to mature and go hard at all times.  When his motor's revving, he brings something special to the game.  He can shoot from the perimeter, plays way above the rim and alters/swats shots with his outrageous wingspan.

With Bryan, Shoemaker, Harker Heights, and A&M Consolidated District 5A is going to break a couple of very good team's hearts as someone has to miss the playoffs.

2011 PG Yolonzo Moore Heads To Hartford

I visited with 2011 PG Yolonzo Moore of Austin Akins yesterday afternoon at the conclusion of my Texas Super Showcase event in Austin, TX where he'd just competed extremely well.  Moore told me that he was mulling over accepting his offers and was down to Stephen F Austin & Hartford, & would make his decision shortly.

His Coach, David Peavey just texted me to say that Moore was headed to the East Coast to join the University of Hartford.  Congratulations to him and his Family!  Moore shoots it well, can get into the lane, involves his team mates and is athletic enough to finish above the rim. He's also a nice young man with character.  He's the straw that stirs the drink for an Akins team looking to go deep into the playoffs this coming season.

D1 Nation Coaches Corner: Mike Murphy of Pflugerville

This edition of D1 Nation Coaches Corner is with my old friend, Coach Mike Murphy of Pflugerville. I caught up with "The Man In Black" yesterday as he eyeballed his Pflugerville Panthers playing in my Sweet 16 Fall Showcase held in Austin.

They will all be a challenge, we have a tough schedule.  In District 16-5A we have Round Rock McNeil, Round Rock Stony Point & Georgetown.

What is the most difficult part of being a high school coach?

Meshing the different attitudes & personalities of players to form a TEAM.

I've known "Murph" for 10 plus years.  He's always got a smile on his face, is always a gentleman, never has a bad word to say about anybody & he loves basketball!  I've had the pleasure to coach his son, and many of his Pflugerville players over the years and he's always been a friend to me and to summer basketball when it's done the right way.  The former Texas Longhorn star can still fire it up from the perimeter like nobody else, bowls a mean high score & is a heck of a golfer (much to my chagrine). We are two of the few guys in basketball who prefer a cowboy hat, and a comfortable pair of boots (I guess we'd better throw former Killlen Coach Bo Burgess into the mix on that one too..lol)-Coach Max Ivany

D1 Nation All American Prodigy Camp: Fall 2010

The Fall Edition of the D1 Nation All American Prodigy Camp was held in Austin, TX today on the beautiful new campus of Concordia University.  Historically this is where fresh, young talent makes themselves known to the basketball world.  With such illustrious young alumni as John Henson (North Carolina), Cory Jefferson (Baylor), Cody Doolin (San Francisco), Paul Garnica (Northern Colorado, D.J. Stephens (Memphis), Deon Mitchell (Northern Iowa) & Daniel Alexander (Texas A&M) just to name a few this camp has spawned stars long before Nike & D1 coaches were even aware that they were prospects.

Today's camp will be no different. Under the watchful eye of D1 Nation's Max Ivany, Speed Killz Period's T.J. Garza & Camp Director Tremaine Wingfield (Louisville & Texas) these fresh faces really got after it.  The format of the All American Prodigy Camp is limited scrimmaging. Instead we split the day into station work in the morning, followed up by integration of those lessons into the afternoon's array of 2 on 2, & 3 on 3 competitions.

We'll do several write ups on the camp over the next couple of days, but a quick arap up of the major award winners were as follows:

3 on 3 Tournament Champions After warming up with 3 on 3 drills including "no dribble" and "one dribble" games of cut throat the trio of 2013 G 5'9" Darius Brooks (Pflugerville), 2013 6'3" G Rasmus Bach (Austin Anderson) & 2012 G 5'10" Malik Brooks of Cibolo Steele won a thrilling victory over the runner up team of 2012 G 5'11" Michael Hardge (Georgetown), 2013 G 6'0" Travis Jenkins (Austin Hyde Park) & 2011 W 6'5" Demondre Harvey (Minden, LA).

2 on 2 Tournament Champions: Darius Brooks & Bach picked up hardware for the second event ina row as they ran the table in 2 on 2 with an exciting nip and tuck win over 2012 6'4" W Brooks Norman (Rouse) & 2013 G Napoleon Oneyeje (Pflugerville).

Hot Shot Shooting Competition: 2012 WG 6'3" Hayden Graham (Austin Anderson) showed he had the smoothest stroke in camp as the lefty captured the Hot Shot Shooting Tournament in picture perfect fashion. It took overtime to do it in the final though as 2013 G Napoleon Oneyeje gave Graham all he could handle.

Mr. Hustle Award:  2012 G Michael Hardge of Georgetown was all over the court.  He made his mark offensively as he got to the rim at will with his ultra quickness, while defensively getting into anyone's jersey he was defending.  By the time Hardge leaves Georgetown as a 4 year starter he'll own every school offensive record in the books. It's easy to see why Texas State pulled the trigger early this summer with the promising junior as he received his first of what's sure to be many D1 offers.

Defensive MVP:  2012 G 5'10" Malik Brooks of Cibolo Steele was the most physical player at camp.  He hit his share of shots, and when he got to the bucket played much bigger than 5'10".  However, it was defensive intensity that made us feel he was a must have player and a winner as his motor never stopped. The Charles Barkley-esque junior should make a big splash as Steele graduated almost their entire team from last season.

Camp MVP: 2013 G Darius Brooks of Pflugerville garnered the MVP Honors by his stellar all around performance. In addition to being a part of the winning 2 on 2 & 3 on 3 squads, Brooks showed high level quickness, leadership and intensity which made him a unanimous choice amongst the Camp Staff for the MVP Award.
