San Antonio's Northside ISD Middle School Championships

This weekend San Antonio's Northside school district held their 8th grade championship tournament. The championship game pitted the future Clark Cougars from Hobby and future Brandeis Broncos from Stinson Middle School. Hobby advanced to the final by beating a tough Rawlinson team in the quarter finals and then knocking off a game Garcia middle school team in the semi finals. Stinson is lead by excellent guard play from 2015's Luke Buckley and the outstanding shooting of Miles Thornton. youngest son of Sam Houston Coach Ike Thornton.

Hobby advanced to the championship final by beating Zachry Middle School Friday night and surviving a scare from Stevenson Middle School in a tough semi final game. Hobby is also lead by very good guard play from 5'5" Nathan Josephs and 5'9" Jake Lindsey, son of Spurs Assistant General Manager, Dennis Lindsey. During their middle school careers this group from Hobby had only lost two games, both two point decisions to Stinson. Everyone in the gym expected a tight game and this one did not disappoint.

Hobby 39  Stinson 38
The game was tight throughout, and Stinson entered the fourth quarter with a 25 - 21 lead behind the hot shooting of Buckley and strong inside play. In the fourth quarter, both teams really got after it and Hobby did not take the lead until just under two minutes left when Nathan Josephs hit a jumper to put Hobby up 37 - 35. The final two minutes were marked by a great defensive effort and wild play by both teams. Despite some shaky foul shooting down the stretch Hobby survived with a 39 - 38 victory. Tournament MVP was clearly Jake Lindsey. He averaged double digits throughout the tournament and demonstrated the basketball IQ you would expect from a young man with his background.

These kids from Hobby and Stinson have played four times in their middle school careers, each winning twice. In fact, Hobby's only two losses in this two year span has been to Stinson. Sets up for what should be a fun rivalry as these young men move on to Clark and Brandeis respectively.
