Austin St. Stephen's Boys Preview

Left: 2012 Mareik Isom and 2010 Evan Sampleton
St. Stephen's fielded almost exclusively a JV squad last night. They have several guys in football and were missing sharp shooter 2009 5'11" Evan Gilliland, who along with other seniors was completing a major senior paper.
St. Stephen's new Head Coach this year is no stranger to the school. They did a little internal shuffling and Coach LaMont King moved from the girls side of the house to the boys. Expect a more disciplined approach along with a more high percentage shot selection with the former Louisiana Tech player at the helm. St. Stephen's backcourt is as good as many of the public schools in the area and should flourish under Coach King, a very good guard in his day in the Sun Belt Conference.

Gilliland is one of the more talented offensive guards in the area and will be the team leader. He'll likely run the PG spot. The only other likely varsity starter in attendance last night was 2010 6'3" P Evan Sampleton whose Pop played football for the Philadelphia Eagles back in the mid 80's.

2012 5'10" Mareik Isom looks to be a future varsity prospect though once his body catches up to his skill set. He's sure to get better under the tutelage of his dad, Kendall and former Spurs great Johnny Moore playing his club ball for the Austin Ice.

2009 6'2" D. J Johnson will likely be the other backcourt starter, along with Gilliland just as they did with the Texas D-1 Ambassadors this past summer. . A pretty darn good basketball player, Johnson has already committed to Texas Tech University to play football.
